Ringside Politics – January 5th, 2020

Welcome to another edition of Ringside Politics with Jeff Crouere

Today’s Hot Topics:

1) President Donald Trump promised to campaign against Georgia's Republican governor and secretary of state in 2022 during a rally for Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler on Monday night in Dalton, Georgia.

"I'm going to be here in a year and a half and I'm going to be campaigning against your governor and your crazy secretary of state, I guarantee you," Trump said to loud cheers.

The president recently sued both Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in an attempt to decertify Georgia's Nov. 3 election, which he lost to President-elect Joe Biden by about 12,000 votes. On Monday, lawyers for Kemp and Raffensperger wrote in a brief that Trump "seeks to disenfranchise millions of Georgia voters" by attempting to overturn the state's election results.

2) President Trump on Monday implored Georgia voters to turn out in two crucial Senate runoff races on Tuesday to stop Democrats from gaining unchecked control of Washington, warning of a push toward socialism, tax hikes, the Green New Deal and packing the Supreme Court with additional justices.

“Your vote tomorrow will decide which party controls the United States Senate,” Trump said at an evening rally in Dalton, Georgia.

“The radical Democrats are trying to capture Georgia’s Senate seats so they could wield unchecked, unrestrained, absolute power on every aspect of your lives,” he warned.

3) U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday warned Beijing not to retaliate in an escalating trade dispute after China said it “will never surrender to external pressure.”

The trade war between the world’s top two economies heightened on Friday after Trump hiked tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, saying China reneged on earlier commitments made during months of negotiations.

Beijing vowed to respond to the latest U.S. tariffs. “As for the details, please continue to pay attention. Copying a U.S. expression - wait and see,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing on Monday.

Trump warned China not to intensify the trade dispute and urged their leaders to continue working to reach a deal. “China should not retaliate-will only get worse,” he said on Twitter.

4) President Donald Trump will make his last stand to overturn his election loss on Wednesday when Vice President Mike Pence presides over a congressional session to ratify November’s results, an event that threatens to strain the relationship between the two men.

Trump’s refusal to concede and his obsession with overturning the will of voters means the ceremony poses a test for his most loyal subordinate. Pence also faces a party divided over Trump’s conduct, a rift that is growing after the president on Saturday pressured Georgia election officials to overturn his loss in the state.

The vice president’s top aides are developing options for him to acknowledge the reality of the November election result while also nodding, in a possible statement, to the president’s unfounded accusations of vote fraud.
